Default Statement of Purpose Space Masters

Statement of Purpose
"A willing mind can reach the unreachable stars"
I strongly believe in these inspiring words. They have always kept the
fire of determination burning in me and have inspired me against
obstacles and hurdles.

I have done my master's (one year program) in December 2003 followed
by Bachelors (Honors) (three year program) in December 2002 from the
department of Physics University of Karachi, Karachi. My intense focus
in my field of study - with the aid of the excellent environment
provided by my course of study and lectures at department of Physics -
rendered me with a strong foundation on both the theoretical and
practical aspects of my subjects and helped me to be among the top
students of my class.

As a student of Physics, I took deep interest in subjects like
Electromagnetism, Electronics and communication, Space Physics, Solid
State Physics, Thermal Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Relatvity and
Cosmology, Opto-Electronics and etc.

Throughout my four years (three years bachelors and one year master's)
at university, I kept myself occupied through a number of projects
that gave me practical experience and an excellent grip on theoretical
concepts. I started by doing some projects on 8051 microcontroller -
serial, parallel interface, seven segment and LCD displays, a working
digital clock - which gave me confidence. Another encouraging factor
was my father who challenged me with interesting projects and provided
me with the money required to complete them.

This started my journey on learning the art of electronics and
communication and gave me considerable advantage over my classmates. I
not only did my own projects, but managed time to help other students,
not necessarily of my own university, in their projects as well. This
is something that I still continue to do so and it has sharply honed
my problem solving and analytical skills.

After completing my M.Sc in Physics from University of Karachi I was
selected as Research and Development officer at Alsons Group of
industries Pvt Ltd is a vibrant and growing defense and R & D sector
in country .While there, I designed a prototype of "Sun tracking
system for LEO satellites"; its purpose was to point the solar panels
towards maximum light intensity with 3600 of freedom. I used an 89C52
microcontroller to embed the algorithm that I had designed to track
the sun and I also developed the mechanical assembly for the prototype
model.

I also had the opportunity to design a project for tracking objects.
It involved the real time capturing of images, after locking the
camera on any object in the scene, it was tracked with the image in
the center of the scene. The processing was done using Matlab and we
were able to track moving and shape changing objects with reasonable
accuracy. This really got me interested in the field Space Physics.

Working for a research organization has helped me acquire considerable
knowledge in image processing, DSP and embedded systems such as FPGAs
and Digital signal Processors as depicted in my curriculum
vitae .These skills would be most beneficial in carrying out the
research work in Space Physics.

I found out about the "Space Master" program through an internet
search for masters programs and I was greatly impressed by the course
program offered by this consortium. The fact that the program is being
offered at some of the centers of excellence with regards to
technology coupled with the quality course outline especially grabbed
my attention. The agenda behind the "Erasmus Mundus" program initiated
by the EU is indeed praiseworthy and will go a long way in creating
not only technically sound engineers but harmonious and friendly
relations between the European people and the citizens of the third
world.
The methods, technologies, and tools being developed for Space have
ample and useful applications in domains such as Defense, Astrology,
communication, space monitoring and security, etc. Therefore, there
are tremendous opportunities for growth and research and I believe I
also have the necessary skills, knowledge and most importantly the
motivation and enthusiasm to do research in Space Physics.
This master's degree would also go a long way in decreasing the
deficit that exists in technical skills in our part of the
world .After completing the Space masters program; I look forward to a
rewarding career in research and development in my country.
I am not a genius. There are many people who will be applying for
admission that are smarter and more experienced than I am. I believe
that my unique combination of skills and interests sets me apart from
the crowd. I am a creative, intelligent, articulate individual with an
intense desire to learn and to use my knowledge to "make a
difference".

xxein: I doubt that you could install a doorbell without the included
instructions.

Do they convey degrees for wishfull thinking?
