he might have felt provoked to adopt it.

Not only are those who support the orthodoxy not
open-minded, they are so in the most offensive way
they can find.

If you have a contrary view, you are automatically told
it is nonsense, and ordered to read text books. If you
have, and don't agree, you are told you haven't done so
properly, and ordered to go back and beat yourself over
the head with the text books until you force yourself to
agree. If you refuse, you are an obstinate idiot and moron,
and whatever else, and don't know the first thing about
anything.

In this context, for anyone representing the orthodoxy to
make an appeal for a 'sense of humanity', from anyone,
represents an expectation that must be laughable
in the extreme.

The orthodoxy can blame themselves for Retic's behaviour.
If they want a 'sense of humanity', let them show it to others,
themselves, first.
