A wrong example. In the (quite classical) Lorentz ether the
speed of light is c as well as in relativity.

The original theory of the ether said the speed would be different when
the
light source is moving forward in the direction of the light as opposed to
the source moving at right angles and thus be able to show a proper motion
through the stationary ether. They then found the speed was the same and
tried to come up with the Lorentz transformations to explain it.

So far ok.

Relativity explained it much better than the Lorentz equations did.

Relativity does not explain. It postulates some principles without even
trying to explain anything.

But, Einstein forewarned that Relativity wouldn't explain to
the religoisus chowderheads, since the only explaination
they needed to fill in the empty spaces in their
Jesus coloring books was E=M*C^2.
