I do not think the number of crazies has dropped off - but the number
of quality posters has - which makes the crazies seem more plentiful. To me
the crazies are a laugh - a good way to while away a bit of time while I am
share trading. I simply ignore the worst like the dyslexic troll Don
Giovanni.

Perhaps you're right about the people who have given up on this
newsgroup, rather than the Dark Side increasing, and do agree about you
with Carlip and Beaz...and that is not that long ago.

I actually do not think that trolls are harmful to a NG, but when
verbal abuse, personal attacks are the standard respons if challanged -
I think it will drive people who know and those who want to learn away.

in the same spirit you could complain about
you neighboor's car color - you having none,
etc etc

It's more like your neighbour's car sound like a ww2 tank and smells
like one to...

agree with it, its stupid

Again, no it's not...

I agree. Especially when they constantly change their name so you can not
killfile or ignore them. I believe that is part of the reason John Baez and
Steve Carlip do not post as often. The attacks I recall on Steve were
especially disturbing considering both his stature and how tolerant he is.

Thanks
Bill

But it is *very* easy to killfile them.
For obvious reasons I'm not going to explain it here of course ;-)

Killfiling is easy, but the interruption in threads of people you don't
have in killfile that responds to someone in your killfile can become
tiring. And killfile is sort of the easy way out too.

Yes, but with a good newsreader you can always kill
(ignore and make invisible) the thread itself.

And killfile is sort of the easy way out too.

hm... I wouldn't label killfiling random word posters like
Sarfatti or OsherD (and many others) as a way out. It's
just common sense to completely ignore them.
After all, what is the point in looking at (let alone wading
through) someone's garbage if you're not interested in his
psychology?

Yes, I agree somewhat, but I'm feeling split about killfiling...but you
might be right about the killfile soloution.

Hi,

Just thought I'd ask what the h*** happened to this NG?

This NG, until recently, had really high standards on participants and
topics, even the so called trolls had it.

When was this golden age? As long as I can remember, this group
was dominated (by volume of posts, anyway) by the likes of
Henry Wilson, Ernest Wittke, etc.

I don't see anyone currently as stupid and psychotic at JosX
these days.

Yes, well, it takes a special kind of crazy to get kicked out of the
(literal) tinfoil hat brigade for being a lunatic.

(I seem to recall him disappearing not long after that mysterious fire
at the one university in Holland not far from where he lived at the
time. Not that ANYWHERE in Holland is far from anywhere else, but
still.)

Mind you, George Hammond is still kicking about the place. He's
already certified insane, although he will insist that this is his
long-term criminal fraud to illegally obtain welfare and hospital
care.

I only check in on rare occasions, and I can't tell that there's
been any real change in content in years.

There hasn't, really. Now, you look over on talk.politics.anials, and
the interesting thing over there is that the nutbars come and go, but
always spouting the same genocidal rants. Of course, since their the
genocidal rants sold by PETA Corp., this isn't surprising.

Now it's full of total
nutcases and idiots that don't even have the curtesy to ask when they
don't understand, or just say the most ridiculous things going for
verbal abuse, ad hominum, personal attacks, and so on when they get
told that they're wrong.

I'm no physiscist and do not claim to be...only a lurker that is
interested in physics, but even I can see that this NG is going down
the drain.

I'll probalby give on this NG soon :-(

When I first started people of the caliber Steve Carlip and John Baez posted
more. I do not think the number of crazies has dropped off - but the number
of quality posters has - which makes the crazies seem more plentiful.

That's a good point, and you really can't blame them. How many times
can you spend a half hour writing a polite and careful response to
some bizarre off the cuff post, only to see the same thing posted
verbatim a couple days later. I'm not usually one to quote the
Bible, but in this case Mat. 7:6 seems appropriate:
"Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither
cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample
them under their feet, and turn again and rend you."

To me
the crazies are a laugh - a good way to while away a bit of time while I am
share trading.

Up to a point, but in the end they remind me of Howard Stern - funny
for
a while and then just repetitious and annoying.

I simply ignore the worst like the dyslexic troll Don
Giovanni. Trouble with him (and others as well) is he changes who hew posts
under so people who are genuinely interested can't even ignore or killfile
him. To me they are the worst.

I don't see anyone currently as stupid and psychotic at JosX
these days.

I must admit he was pretty bad.

Thanks
Bill

hereby youve been expossed as liar, again

you dont need killfile, killfile is an oxymoron, its simple, you only
need not to read the posts in discussions, doing it you contradict
yourself
