Bill Hobba:
Got a couple of papers on the issues and need to work through them to see what is happening. What some say is that provided super-symmetry is in effect no problem. But when you apply a cutoff below that region then the problems arise. What I do not understand is why it is ok to apply a cutoff and get an answer that is not in agreement with experiment and say there is a problem - raise the cutoff and no problems arise. That isn't ok. The final result is supposed to be independent of the cutoff. On the other hand, it might not really make any difference. While one might be able to make some rather broad, general statements about the physics one might expect to appear on the horizon, it's probably a bit premature to worry if some theory about non-existent physics is in deep trouble because of a mathematical nitpick. The real trouble is that there aren't any phenomena searching for a theory at the moment [see below, also]. Perhaps it is simply an artifact of the arbitrary cutoff and we have not taken into account the physics of regions we have no direct knowledge of. BTW from what I have read so far I am with Weinberg - I am not convinced there is a problem but will reserve my opinion until I have investigated it further. The issue still seems rather puzzling. Will see if I can get a paper by Weinberg on it. I think if you read between the lines, you'll get the following message: ``Help... Desparate for some new physics to explain...'' |
