"Quasar" is a contraction of "quasi-star".
They look like stars, in that they are point-like objects as opposed to
fuzzy nebulous objects (such as galaxies), and show tremendous redshift.
If we conjecture that the shift is a result of a high velocity, then we
would
conclude that they are also an enormous distance from us, due to
a supposed expanding universe. This means that the are brighter than
whole galaxies. This is enigmatic, for how could one star outshine
a galaxy?
You can detect them by looking though a powerful telescope, and
they look like:

Although the jury is still out on what they really are.

Idiot.

Quasar is from quasi-stellar radio source, or quasi-stellar object.
Learn the nomenclature before you spew.
