The key unconscious assumption is that you believe what you see.
To do that, you unconsciously attribute a constancy to the light you see by.
If light were not constant, faster light could pass slower light on its way
here, and you'd see strange effects. The effects you've been seeing are not
strange, because you are familiar with them. But they really are strange,
you just haven't realized it yet.

No I don't. The struggle is not with the constancy of the speed of
light, but letting go of the notion of some sort of absolute reference
for time.
