There you go pulling another 180. D/dt can be read the covariant total
derivative with respect to proper time, or just covariant derivative for short.
Your mistake is that you saw in one book the covariant partial derivative part
of a chain rule expression called by "covariant derivative along a path" and
automatically jumped to the conclusion that a covariant total derivative was
not a covariant derivative as well.
