No, you silly person; any random person unfortunate enough to open this
post, for example, will see you replying to "You" without any
attribution or context and will immediately figure out there is nothing
worth reading and will quickly move one. Do you get it yet?

Default Art Deco's the cripple here, the one with the complaints, not me.

Unlike you, I Always know who's replying to whom.
You're the cripple here, the one with the complaints, not me.
I'm happy as a clam, surfing UseNet in fine style, thank you very much.

Even plain ol' Outlook goes to the parent post
when you hit the left arrow icon ( right arrow takes you back ).
Your newsreader is worse than Outlook, near as I can tell.

Right now, in Visual Studio 2005,
as I'm about to reply to you, your header looks like this:

Hand rolled? You have to masturbate it in order to get it working?

My hand-rolled newsreader makes this extremely plain,
but even plain ol' Outlook goes to the parent post
when you hit the left arrow icon ( right arrow takes you back ).

That's my point. You have to do extra work to go to a different post,
wade through the post (if longish) to find what the person was saying and
in the process lose the context of the first post, and then go back to
the original. In this post, for example, what I am replying to is staring
you right in your face. And only the appropiate part, not the whole post.

Again, the immediate subthread ( up to 5 levels away )
oldest first, down the root to your post is:

? Michael_Moroney
Jeff?Relf
Art_Deco

Michael_Moroney
Jeff?Relf
Michael_Moroney ?.

Nobody is interested in a bunch of gobbledygook numbers like message_ids!

(Again, just the appropiate part of your post quoted)

Perhaps you can write a half-assed newsreader, but you just don't get the
human interface part. (I've also seen one of your screenshots. Those
colors are hideous!)

Default Michael Moroney, please don't pretend you're sloppiness is “ all that ”.

Quite unlike me, you're simply not taking the time
to concisely paraphrase and use normal “ ” quotes, as books do.

You don't care enough about UseNet to use anything other than “ nn ”,
a long-decrepit newsreader that seldom gets updated;
while I, on the other hand, carefully craft my homemade newsreader.

When conversing with me, you tell me flat-out that
you can't be bothered to check who is replying to whom.

You don't have to care about me or others on UseNet, of course,
but please don't pretend you're sloppiness is “ all that ”.

I'm a 48 year old life-long coder ( currently using VC++ 8.0 ),
working in a dark room with a tiny mono-directional lamp that's
pointing at the keyboard ( but it's often switched off ).

So my eyes are ultra-sensitive to light ( my mom is the same way ).
Seriously, black is the only background color I can tolerate, e.g.:

I Require dim colors on black.
When viewing plain-text, I turn-down the monitor's “ Brightness ”;
and I turn it up when I wish to view photos or videos.

Default Which cigarettes are as wide as a wooden matchstick ( 1 mm ) ?

I'm offered pot ( and beer ) all the time,
but it doesn't do much for me, so I decline it.

Which cigarettes are as wide as a wooden matchstick ( 1 mm ) ?
I once found ( and smoked ) a 1 mm wide cigarette
and loved it, but I didn't note the brand name.

I can't find the brand name on the Internet,
and none of my tobacco shops know anything about it,
so I'm thinking it was from Japan or something.

Normally, I fill machine-maded filtered tubes with tobacco.
I can't afford that anymore, so I'm looking for alternatives.

Sun-dried lawn clippings work, sun-dried leaves work,
ground sage ( looks like lint ) kind of works and I can buy it
at bulk-prices ( 11 dollars a pound ) using food stamps.

Poor people can get food stamps
and 12 dollars off their monthly phone bill;
I don't get anything else ( e.g. no cash, no housing ).

This is Usenet, not a book, no matter what you (or Archimedes Plutonium)
think. I do it this way because it's convention, and better for those who
read, since they don't have to swap back and forth between two or more
posts (even if their newsreader makes it easy).

You don't care enough about UseNet to use anything other than ? nn ?

Why does the newsreader I use bug you so much?

Regardless, Usenet itself is getting decrepit and is an internet dead-end.
ISPs are farming out or dropping NNTP services completely, so it becomes
an extra cost to the customer who has to buy it from Supernews or similar.
It used to be you couldn't have an ISP without NNTP or other usenet
access. What will the extra cost do? Newcomers who aren't familiar with
it won't pay, and won't "discover" it, or if they do, it'll be via Google
Groups or similar. Just another blog or chat page to them.

Usenet software development is quite limited, other than efforts to
webify newsgroups.

When conversing with me, you tell me flat-out that
you can't be bothered to check who is replying to whom.

No, I hardly ever have to check, because 99% of the time it's right at
the top of the post, and 99% of the time the text being replied to is
right in front of the reply with "" preceding each line. Your posts,
much of that 1%, just make a little extra work (for anyone, not just me).

Also, don't confuse my not agreeing with your stupid ideas as "sloppiness".
I just find them stupid.
