I believe that this supposed necessity of linearity is a very common
misconception. I have challenged the claim wherever I have encountered
it and find it strange that, on this one point, I have never received
so much as a single word of doubt. Doesn't anyone understand what's
being said?

What exactly is your objection on this point? The linearity is based
on a few premises which are basically as follows

(1) The laws of physics "here" are the same as the laws of physics
"there" (homogeneous)

(2) The laws of physics "in this direction" are the same as the laws
of physics "in that direction" (isotropic)

(3) The laws of physics "today" are the same as the laws of physics
"tommorow"
