Default work function of a metal

Hi,

I was just wondering how to estimate the work function of a metal?

for example, I have a potential well, where electrons fill the states from
the bottom state up to 7 eV above the potential floor, where the top of the
potential well is 12 eV. How do I determine from this what the work
function is?

Whatever your model, remember that diamond has a negative work
function into vacuum. Theoreticians only fear one entity - an
experimentalist.
