Neither QED nor the 'Standard Model' actually contain physical models.
Neither were derived from any underlying physical principles. They are
cookbooks that work quite well. But no one knows why. And -- because

there
is no underlying physical model -- no one knows where they will break

down.
Which is why we have recurrent modifications to the 'Standard model'

(which
is significantly different in 2003 than it was in the 1970s.)

All that fundamental physics (physicists) can aspire to be (do), is (to
provide) a mental method whereby some brains and computer modeling
soft/hardware can create "workable" (i.e., by more or less contrived means
of observation verifiable) mathematical metaphors for "What Is" (absolutely,
unresolvably or forever a mystery to inquiring minds).
