I recall at a town meeting in Maypearl, Texas, when the
Superconducting Super Collider was being proposed, a kindly looking
woman stood up and asked it if was true that there were magnets in the
tunnel underground. She was told yes, very powerful magnets. She said
that this is what she had heard too and that there was a real risk
that children with braces in their mouths would get pulled to the
ground if they walked directly overhead. The ambient noise in the town
hall increased as the scientists in the room considered how to
respond. Finally, one of them asked her who had told her that. Another
man stood up and said he did, and asked if it was true. The SSC fella
asked this man what he did in Maypearl. It turns out he was a real
estate developer, and he had spread this little fabrication around
because he was certain that property values in Maypearl were going to
decline when the SSC came in.

And that is about the same level
of intelligence that accepts Black Holes as real.
Matter can accrete to where it annihilates itself just
as easily as a snake can eat its own tail to where
it disappears.

Here's the key point:

"If the LHC can produce microscopic black holes, cosmic rays of much
higher energies would already have produced many more. Since the Earth is
still here, there is no reason to believe that collisions inside the LHC are
harmful. [...] "

Well that sums it up pretty well.

Energies as high as the LHC will produce bombard the earth on the
order of 1m times per second.
That guarantees us 100% safety. The LHC merely provides a place to
analyze the resulting collisions in great detail.

The same can not be said about fission devices or bose-einstein
condensates.. those conditions are such that have never been observed
in the universe. If you want to be afraid of manmade cataclysms,
those are a better bet.

Well, it's all good for the LHC - any publicity is good publicity.

If this ends up happening, you always have the option of redress in
tort court. I imagine you'll be able to file for a substantial damages
claim.

All that you'll see come of it is papers written by cretins trying to be
mathematicians. Lots of papers, nothing new. It's a toy for training
tiny minds into thinking they are great... but we have to try.
I heard the humble TV tube is to be replaced by an array of glowing

to atom-smash the old phosphors with high voltage electron

my view is that whatever we're doing is why we exist, pollution and
all; just helplessly following the blueprint of the universe. lhc
seems the biggest most cooperative example of what we do - consolidate

dissent is required by the law of large numbers, but i still think lhc
is pretty neat...

[snip crap]

Bull****.

The Church of Rome banned crossbows in warfare because they would
extinguish all human life on Earth. The human body would disintegrate
if it traveled at 35 mph on a train. A human would go insane 1000 ft
up in a balloon. Nobody could survive in micro-gee orbit.

snip...

And in 1945 the atomic bomb was going to ignite the atmosphere and blow up
the earth or at least cook it..

Not as "neat" as Concorde or the Titanic or the British Museum or
a cell phone or an electron microscope but it's still a big new toy, you'll
get over it. Go smash a proton with a proton, they won't let me play
with big boys toys so maybe I'm jealous.
Heck, I didn't even get to fly on Concorde even though I helped build it.

Funny how when one proton is approaching the other at 6.0E+08 m/s
that's "at near c"... some people need a 2x4 laid alongside the ear
to double their intelligence.
Relativist cranks are as crazed as ".99999999 % the speed of light".
Whooohoo, I can write lots of 9's and still screw up.

Well...

Just consider the capital of any country in the world, if you want to
see cataclysm in the making... whether or not that is "natural"
behavior...

Well, it's all good for the LHC - any publicity is

Didn't work for animal testing, and that is a lot of periphery to
guard...

After they publish their first result, and teh world does not end 4
minutes later, the fogetting will begin.
