Why do you think radiation will prevent the occurance of life? You don't think
life must begin on a dry "exposed" surface do you? Removal of earths magnetic
field would flood the Earth with radiation from the Van Alan belts, but that is
only a problem for us surface dwellers who have evolved on a low radiation
surface.
