The Cold War at the time was largely about who was technically superior.
It's why there was a "space race", part of which was Apollo. The USSR
would have just *loved* to prove the moon landings were all a hoax, if
they could. Why didn't they?

The Chinese did say it was a hoax. But they couldn't prove it...

At most any time they could prove it by simply going in for the kill,
if need be orbiting their ongoing mission down to as low as 10 km over
our supposed landing sites.
